Smile...

 ...it's hump day!

We made it!  Only two more days and it will be the weekend!!  And a beautiful weekend it will be!

This bowl of fruit is my breakfast.  Sometimes I just dont feel like making a smoothie, so I just eat fruit.  The peaches are still so good.  The grapes are at a reasonable price around here and the nanners...well, that is a little over ripe for some, but for me it is just right

Well, we did not go thrifting today.

I did not realize today is Wednesday until this morning.

We have a standing prior comittment for Wednesday evenings.

Soooooo, no thrifting today.  Boo

But maybe tomorrow!!  Woot!  Woot!

Until then...

Week in Review

Hey there!  How are you?  How was your week with all the weather challenges?  Looks like we will be facing more cold weather this week  I hope everyone will be wrapped in warmth and safety!

I love Fall and Winter.  I mean, really love.  But...it was way cold for me this last week! This was a little too much.  It would have been ok if we had still been at 4026 with its central heat and air and fireplace, but staying here at Mom's house is a very different story.  My poor mom!  She has been dealing with these winter spells for a few years now without any heat.  She used to have an air conditioner that also blew heat, but I guess the element is out on it.  Getting that checked really needs to be on our "to do" list.

We had one good sized electric heater going that never got past 58 degrees in the coldest, darkest point of this blizzard (I know...I have a knack for drama, huh?).  Not only were we dealing with keeping ourselves warm, but we also had to figure out what to do with those hooligans most people call dogs.  It has been real and it has been fun, but it hasn't been real fun.

In other news, my niece, Ashleigh, had a couple of showers this week.  Last Sunday's was a Bridal Shower.

It was a really nice party at the church.  She got lots of great stuff--cookware, pyrex, and baking stuff--which left us with the sudden urge to steal.  What is it about new cookware that will drive a woman to crime????

This past Friday was a Lingerie Shower.  Woo hoo!  Talk about fun!  We laughed so hard...laughter really is good medicine!  I ran into the store and bought her a REALLY racy little thing to be given from me and mom.  When I showed it to mom I got, "Jennifer!  How could you buy that horrible thing?"  That's what a lingerie party is for, isn't it???

Anywho...they had a shin-dig out at Colton's dad's place on Saturday, but it was just too cold for me to make it.  Ol' Dawg went and drank a few brews and ate shrimp and chili, but the only thing he took pictures of was the neat crawfish/shrimp boiler thing.  Men....

Since this past week was so UN-productive, I have high hopes for this week.  One thing for sure I know I need to do is work on Ashleigh's wedding video and be available to help out in any way.  Any ideas on a good, romantic song to use for a video of two people falling in love?  I have no clue?

Also, wanna get a little done at the studio...remove nails, knock down some more sheetrock...exhilerating stuff, here.

And, I would love to get a schedule going for myself.  I am just wandering through life right now, letting it run me.  I need to get control and make the best of this situation of not having a place of our own for the moment.  It could be worse.

What's on the agenda for your week? Any big plans?  Whatever your plans may be...have fun and be careful!  Love ya!

Top 10 Things to Love About Being Back in BC

  •  All you can get done in 15 minutes-- I wanted to get a card for my nieces shower before I went to help decorate and of course, I didn't think about it until fifteen minutes before I was supposed to be at the church.  I went halfway across town to CVS, picked a card (and we all know picking a card can take time especially since I am if one is indecisive) and got back across town to the church all in 15 minutes.  I made it!  Ok, Ok, some may say I was a minute late, but I say our time pieces were just unsynchronized.
  • Going to WalMart and finding front row parking by the garden center--Ahhh, that's the best.  There is actually a very good chance the very first parking space by the garden center will be open and waiting just for you!  Dickinson? Fuhgit about it.
  • Taking the same routes I took 28 years ago when I started driving--I guess my subconscious takes me by the same routes as back when and I love it.  I love that 6th street doesn't have that many stop signs (shhhh...don't tell the city), and all the trees that line both sides of Avenue K, near Marguerite St.  I love going into the neighborhood off Marguerite and seeing the house on the corner where my friend Mark used to live and driving by Avenue L on that side to see the house my friend Denise lived in.  Oh the memories of stalking the cute guy across the street pitching tents, playing Atari and walking all the way to the corner store on Avenue F.
  • 50 Pot Holes in every cubic yard of practically every street--Ok, that is really just a subtle hint to someone who might be reading from the City of BC.  Is there not a budget for street repair?  And please don't think adding more stop signs will make said potholes less evident.
  • Running into old friends that used to be close with my brother, Chris, and hearing their memories of him--I saw an old friend today that he adored.  We reminisced about how long it had been, she shared a story about him and another friend that was in the same room laughed because the story was "so Chris".  It is quite comforting that others still remember him and that he made an impact on their lives.
  • Mama's breakfast/cooking--One never tires of their Mama's cooking!  When we first moved here from Corpus Christi several years ago, Mom cooked for us everyday.  I remember back when I was a kid, she would make huevos(eggs), bacon, pappas(potatoes), pork chops, ranchero sauce....  Now-a-days, breakfast is usually eggs and bacon and coffee.  We don't try to stop her from making breakfast unless she looks like she isn't feeling well.  I can sense that it means a lot to her to feel useful.  She will always be useful to me even if the time comes when she can do nothing, but you cant convince her of that.
  • Family--Our Bay City people never went to visit us in Dickinson. Well, they did go to our house when my nephew was staying with us but, obviously that doesn't count because they went to see him we were just by product :D.  After he left nobody went except Mom.  Reckon there is a subtle hint there?  Who knows...they may not come to our house here either.  We dont mind doing the visiting, at least we wont have to drive an hour now.  We can just drive up the road.  I plan on visiting my Aunt Mercy more and my cousins are just 15 minutes away.  I hope and pray we can make the time to spend some time together.
  • Did I mention the parking at Walmart????--Well, it bears mentioning again.  Oh no, I almost forgot!!  THE FISHING--Cant wait till Big Brother and Ol' Dawg are able to go chunk a lure.  We were somewhat busy w/the remodel last week and the water was muddy on Friday, but the time is coming.  They did go shoot guns today.  As long as they are having a little fun :)
  • We are one hour and a half closer to San Antonio and Corpus Christi--Our San Antonio people went to visit us about twice a year and our Corpus person...well...the fish are always biting, the deer are always moving, the girls are always hot and the beer is always cold...anyway...since we have to drive to see them too, at least it will not be via the Houston freeways and traffic.  That will be much better.

And the NUMBER ONE thing I love about being back in good ol' BC...........................

  • Being here for Mom--It really is a blessing to be here to take her to doctor appointments, the Dollar Store, WalMart, out to eat, to McDonald's to get an ice cream (shhhh...don't tell Dr. Neret), drink coffee with her, watch QVC and CNN.  I am open to whatever it is the Lord has planned for us to enjoy. I am painfully aware that Mama wont be here forever, none of us will, for that matter.   This time with her is precious and I am so very thankful for it.  I cant wait til spring when, the good Lord willing, we will go to the Local Nurseries and look at all the beautiful plants.

Do you have a top ten list of loves??  If so, please share! We would love to read them.

Until we meet again...many blessings, joy and love to you!

We are Leased!

Hello Everyone!!  Were you beginning to think we blew away with 2010?  Nope, no such luck.  We are like a couple of old pennies...we just keep turning up :D

I hope the newness of the new year is still with you and all is going well.  Some bloggers took a little break during the holiday, but ours came after.  I think our brains are ready to function again.

Our new year started out with a bang.  First, my niece had an anniversary party for Pam and Leo.  It was small and sweet. She, her sister and two brothers did a fine job.  A post will be coming soon.

We have our first Casa Causpanic announcement.  Yea!!  We are in the process of completing the paperwork for a lease on our house.  Woot! Woot!  It is actually bittersweet for me, but Ol' Dawg is thrilled.  So, the packing process will finally resume and I am hoping with all my heart we can make enough progress on the studio to be able to move in when the time comes...January 26th.  Geez.  I actually broke down and cried for a couple of minutes, but I'm good now...I think.

So, exciting things to come.  Hope you will drop by to see all the changes or just to say "howdy!"

What the Heck did You Mean by That??

This is a follow up to this post, Thanksgiving Table Setting.  I just re-read it and I didn't like how it ended.  Blog tip #1:  read your post before you post!

I was worried that maybe a reader might think the reason that particular Thanksgiving dinner was the last one at our house was because of the babies crying.  NO WAY, NO HOW!  We so love all the babies in the family and nothing could ever keep us away from them, especially not a little crying.  Our hearts were really breaking for them and for their parents and for Great Grandma.

It's one of those things you look back on and laugh at and are thankful for.  Its one of those memories we will share every Thanksgiving just like we relive the time his Daddy screamed bloody murder from under the dinner table when he was a kid because he didn't get the turkey leg.  That is hilarious now, but not so much, back then.

Thank goodness Baby Boy decided he could handle the Artichoke shade of paint...either that or his Great Grandma quit pinching him...we had a few more gatherings there after that day and we are looking forward to many more at the Studio when we move back.

I feel better now.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

A few years ago my Aunt Mercy gave me her Franciscan Desert Rose China.

I love that China--mostly because she gave it to me.

She has always given me so much.  She is a special person and has gone above and beyond what most aunts are expected to do.  She was a night shift nurses aide in the maternity ward back in her younger days.  That did not stop her from taking care of me during the day while my mom and dad went to work.  (Of course, it helped that I was a little angel and did no wrong.)  It also did not stop her from taking me, on many occasion, to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston (over an hour from our home town) to see doctors.  Don't get me wrong, it is something I would definitely do for my niece and nephews and my great-niece and nephews, but I am aware of how hard it would be.

There were three occasions when I was in leg casts as a child and each time she helped take care of me.  She would come to our house in the morning after working all night, cook me what seemed like a pound of bacon and two pieces of toast before going to bed.  She knew I couldn't get into much trouble, as I was weighted down with casts.  One year I was in my cast when the Rice Festival came to town.  Now as a kid, you don't want to be anything but up and running when the Rice Festival comes to town.  There is a huge parade, well huge for BC, and then a fair with rides, cotton candy and freedom to roam with your friends.  But that year I was doing none of that.  I was in a cast from my toes to my chest.  Quite disappointing for a seven year old to miss the Parade back then.  But, thanks to my aunt I didn't miss it!  She lowered the windows in the back seat of her car, slid a board through and put me on it.  I got to see the whole parade!  Maybe her mama knew something when she named her "Mercy".

I have only used my china a few times-each time for Thanksgiving-a couple of times in Corpus and once in BC.  That year in BC was a disaster.  Mom cooked one of the turkeys that year and nobody believed it was done.  We cooked the ham and I guess it was overdone.  Then my nephew and his wife had three month old twins. Mama could not wait to get Baby Boy in her arms.  Everything was fine until she took him into the dining room.  Don't know what happened but he started screaming bloody murder (we think he didnt like the Artichoke color on the walls).  There was no blood and Mama didn't murder him-she didnt even pinch him, but he would not stop crying.  Nobody could comfort him.  Then Baby Girl decided he was not getting results so she tried to help by crying bloody murder too!  Mommy and Daddy couldn't comfort them and as new parents of twins, they, understandably, were not in the best of moods.  We could have cut the tension and discomfort with a carving knife.  Mom was devastated and on the verge of crying.  Everyone begged to hold them, thinking they might have the magic touch, but Mommy and Daddy packed them up to take them home.  Then we were all sad.  Little did we know, they never left!  It wasnt enough that the poor parents were probably sleepy and hungy or that their babies were screaming at the top of their lungs, but when they went out to take them home they discovered their car battery was dead!  That was the last time we had Thanksgiving at our house.

Not sure how this post digressed from table setting to more nostalgia, but hope you enjoyed it.  What about you?  Where will you be spending Thanksgiving?  Any Thanksgiving disaster stories?

Possible Nightmares Ahead

As I sit here this chilly Saturday evening, full of ribeye steak, baked tater and chocolate chip cookies I watch Texas Aggie Football and peruse the archives of Confessions of a Pioneer Woman, one of my many favorite blogs.  Oh, how she entertains me.  I was happily adoring recordings of her child's cuteness when trying to pronounce his "J"'s, feeling the pain of her Humiliation Chronicles and truly grossing out on her Gross Out stories when the image that will haunt my nocturnal bliss appeared.

Even though I may have nightmares about retaliating, zombie calf nuts, I have the morning routine to look forward to to drive away the night terrors.  Any time the weather gets colder "the girls" get to come into their "Big, big House"---our garage.  I call it their big, big house because they already have a pretty big dog house outside.  But, they love coming in so we happily oblige.  The best part of that is in the morning, when Ronnie lets them out, Maggie quietly comes into our bedroom and sits right by my side of the bed.  Her breathing stinky breath wakes me up.  I pet and love her and she licks my arm until I say, "ok, it's time to go outside and potty".  She then turns and runs to the door and the lingering stinky dog smell lulls me right back to sleep.  Waking up to that beautiful, stinky yellow lab has to be one of the greatest highlights of my day.  Thank you, Bradley Peterson!  And thank you to my sweet husband for letting me have her even though we already had two...or was it three?  Who knows?!.

We had a showing yesterday.  Woot Woot!  Ok, cancel the party...we havent heard anything from them.  It was just to lease the house, anyway.  I would prefer to sell, but at this point we will take what we can get.

I had the bright idea to try to create that "this is home" feeling by boiling some cinnamon sticks, cloves and pumpkin pie spice.  We cleaned the place spotless and were finishing up last minute details when all of a sudden it was "Home for the Holidays" gone "Ladder 49".  The water had boiled out of the pan and the spices were all of a sudden incinerated at the bottom of the pot.  Not exactly that "this is home" feeling I was going for.   It was more like "this is home and we lost all our belongings in the fire" smell.

Maybe I was sub-consciously sabbatoging the sale/lease of the house.  Either that or I am not as big a fan of beans as Ronnie is, as it was his bean making pot that got r-u-i-n-e-d, ruined!  The good news is that the "just burned pie" smell was undetectable when we got home, so we think maybe it was gone when they visited...fingers crossed...or not (insert wicked, sabbatoge laugh).

Tamale Recipe Pre-ramble, I Mean, Preamble

Have you ever heard that joke, "Why do Mexicans have tamales at Christmas?"  "So we will have something to unwrap!"  Hardy, har, har.  Insert knee slap here.  That isn't a very nice joke, I don't guess, but I'm Mexican and it doesn't offend me and I hope it doesn't offend others.

The real reason we have tamales is because it is a time honored tradition.  It is an opportunity to spend time together to commune and work.  Yes, making tamales is A LOT of work!  That must be why nobody in our family makes them anymore.  Another one of those things for which we just don't have time.  I can remember going with my mom to my Aunt Mercy's house to help her make dozens and dozens of tamales...because if you are going to go to the trouble you may as well make a lot.  There were times my aunt would reciprocate the favor and go to our house and help mom.  I mostly always just got in the way and ate raw masa until I was about to burst.

The last several years, Mom and I have made tamales together.  My mom is a strong lady.  She is in her seventies and can still make the best tamales with the best of them.  Making tamales and chopping the vegetables the night before Thanksgiving for the corn bread dressing are two things I look forward to doing with my mom every year.  We are doing something so mundane, yet bonding and being friends and just sharing love in our own way.  Man, those memories stand vividly in my mind.

She was always so patient with me.  You would think I would remember what to do from year to year, but I didn't, so she would have to start over teaching me every year.  My heart overflows thinking of all I learn from my Mama.  I am so blessed to have such an awesome Mama and I can tell you I thank God for her often!  I have to admit...I am often impatient and get grouchy at times, but she knows that is just me and that I love her more than life itself.  Ahhh, the unconditional love of a Mama.  I can't even imagine how hard it must be for a mama to let her child go out into the world and learn their own lessons and make their own mistakes all the while making them believe she has all the confidence in the world in that child, but she did it perfectly.  In case you couldn't tell...I really love my Mama and cherish every moment with her...and NO, you cant have her...but I am happy to share!

Next post, I promise...the tamale recipe!

Plugged in

We have electricity!!

Thanks to Alfred Coeffer, we finally have electricity.  First of all he made it financially feasible for us the get the work needed, done.  I really does pay to look around and get several quotes.  We had already built a relationship another company and we had pretty much indicated that we were going to be doing a lot of work and that we would have liked for them to do it.  Then they wanted to charge us $300-$400 to add a couple of ground fault construction plugs and isolate some lines.  Do What????  My husband called them several times trying to negotiate with them, to no avail.

So, as much as we hated to, we called some other electricians and found Alfred.  His quote was a third of the other electrician's quote.  "Sold to the girl with the pony"!!  Alfred you have our gratitude and our business.

So, next week we can build our fence (if the city has gone by to mark where the pipe lines are) and start some demo.  Woot Woot!!

We have some baked chicken and potatoes cooking in the oven, some salad chillin' in the refrigerator and some Vodka mixers gettin their chill on in the freezer.  Look for a post on tamales in Casa Causpanic Kitchen, soon.  Mom and I are going to make some and give you step by step advice on how to make your own Holiday tamales!  After you see how much fat is in them, you may not want to ever eat a tamale again.  Nahhhh!

So happy you stopped in at Casa Causpanic!  Wish you were here to savor the aroma floating around the house.  What's for dinner at your house?  Any particular dishes you like best on the weekend?  Send us some recipes, we love to try new things!  Until next time!  Have a great weekend!

"Spook-tacular" Halloween at Casa Causpanic

Woo-hoo!  Halloween is over!  Boy Howdy, what a fun night it was.  We really never do the Halloween thing.  Like I said before in my post about our ideas for costumes, my niece usually invites us to the little carnival deal at their church, but they did not have it this year.  Sooooo...we kinda thought it would be a neat idea to terrorize the children of the neighborhood.

I know, I really do look like the Wicked Witch of the West, only a little "fluffier".  Ronnie was pretty scary...if he wasn't spewing out this horrific, terrifying laugh, he was silent...mute...dummied up...which was scarier than the spine tingling laugh.

I was really worried about scarring our little neighbor, Carter, for life with our frightening costumes.  He was alright when he saw Mean Green Witchy Woman...I guess he recognized my voice, but he wasn't so sure about Mr. Skeleton Hunter Man.  He actually took a few steps back.  Then, Mr. Skeleton Hunter Man took of his faux face and revealed Mr. Ron and Rock Star Carter had a good laugh!  I cannot tell you how much we love this little man!!

I get such a huge smile on my face just uploading this picture!

Once it got darker, Mr. Skeleton Man and his wife Mean Green Witchy Woman sat outside to enjoy the laughter and good time had by all the children.

Mean Green Witchy Woman is not only mean, but lazy, and has made a promise to herself that next year she will take pictures of all the little ghosts and goblins that come by our home.

Seriously, my resemblance to the Wicked Witch is disturbing me..."I'll get you little prettay".  Anyway, eventually, either someone threw a bucket of water on the Mean Green Witchy Woman or we ran out of candy.

Let me just say that my husband is in his late sixties and he was so willing and so ready to dress up.  I was so impressed by that and it makes my heart swell that we can have that much fun together.  All in all, it was like opening presents at Christmas, it all went by so fast, but we had fun!!

What about you?  Did you do anything special for Halloween?  Maybe a carnival or a spook house?  Whatever it was, we sure hope you had a "SPOOK-TACULAR" time also!!

Did You Pay Verizon?

Of course I did!!  Maybe...hmmm...maybe not.

I don't know why we do it.  It is so easy for others to separate the important stuff from the non-important stuff at the time it comes in.  Not for us.  I could try to blame it on the fact that we don't have a shredder right now.  Yep, can't just throw it in the trash...it MUST be shredded.  Nope, that isn't the reason for this mess we go through every other week.  It is just being so busy lazy.  There, I said it.  According to Dr. Phil you can't change it if you don't own it.  Whatever, Dr. Phil.  But, in my defense, it really would be easier if we went ahead and got another shredder. I like this one.  Originally, $49.99 down to $24.99 after rebate at Staples.  Not bad.

It took us about 15 minutes to sort through that mess.  It was mostly credit card offers (if they only knew) and sale flyers.  But there was some important stuff that we divided into the categories of ACTION NEEDED, FILE, PAY and PURSE (department store coupons and a coupon for a free birthday adjustment from my favorite chiropractor.  See...there is some good stuff in all that mess).

There really was a time that I had a very good filing system.  Even so, I am kind of hit and miss.  Sometimes I file, sometimes I stack all the stuff to be filed.  But, honestly, I really don't like filing.  I disliked it even when I got paid to do it!  I'm surely not interested in doing it for free.

So, from now on what needs to be paid will be paid right then, what needs to be shredded will be shredded right then and what needs to be filed will be placed in a basket and, hopefully, Ronnie will have mercy on me and file it!

By the way, I DID pay the Verizon bill.  I knew I had...ok, ok, I was pretty sure (alright already! I had no idea).  Here's hoping you have better luck with your paper piles and wishing you a very happy, blessed day!!

Falling for Fall

As I've said before, I Love Fall!  The weather has been so incredible and the web is chock full o inspiration for fall decor.  There was a time I would decorate for every season.  Somewhere along the way I lost the motivation to do it.  But, thanks to Young House Love I decided to look for inspiration for fall decorating.

Check out what I found at one of my favorite sites, HGTV.com:

Love this look created by a Rate My Space User.  Sleek and simple,

Like something more rustic?  This one might inspire you:

There are many elements to this photo but my favorite is the stacked pumpkins inspiring the thought to make a "Pumpkin Man".  Those are actually foam pumpkins, so they can be used year after year!

I found this at marthastewart.com and definitely plan on implementing it today.  It's called Pumpkin Pie Potpourri.  You just cut off the top, scrape the inside, carve out vents and then rub cinnamon on or push cloves into the the lid.  Just click on this link for mored detailed how-to information.

Just a few pics and ideas to get your creative juices flowing so you can make the most of and delight in the season.  Enjoy!!

Tea Party

For some reason Ronnie and I go through phases with what we love to eat and drink.  Then, gradually, they just fade away to different things and we forget all about them.  Hopefully, this part of our blog will remind us and you of something we have not had in a while and keep us out of a food and beverage rut!

This morning I woke up with stuffy sinus syndrome so I brewed a nice, warm, aroma rich cup of peppermint and lemon tea.  The warmth and aroma cleared my sinuses right up.  But herbal tea isn't only delicious when it's steaming hot.

So, this afternoon I threw...

1 small bag peppermint tea

1 small bag lemon tea

1 small bag green tea

into the carafe of our automatic coffee maker.  I ran 4 cups of purified water through and let steep for 30 minutes.  I then diluted it with about 3 cups water and garnished with fresh sliced lemon and poured over ice.  It was, as they say, "Slap your Mama" good! Sometimes we use agave nectar for sweetener, but it is flavorful enough that it can be enjoyed just like it is.  We get crazy and experiment with different combinations of herbal teas and are always pleasantly surprised.

It's a nice refreshing alternative for lunch, a bridal shower or just getting together with a couple of girlfriends over girl talk.

A Time to Pack

As you may have read in this post or this post, we are moving at the end of this month.  Have we started the packing process?  If you know us, you know the answer to that question.  It just seems so far away.

When I moved from home to attend college I had a twin bed, a hand me down recliner, and clothes.  That was an easy move.  No planning, no moving truck, no movers necessary. We threw the few items I had into my dad's little blue Ford pick-up truck and headed out.  Don't ask me how, but three years later I had accumulated enough "stuff" to fill up a full size Chevy truck bed.  Not only that, but when my dad and my brother, Chris, arrived to load up I still had not finished packing.  I have vivid memories of Chris stewing in anger and frustration as we drove to the U-Haul place at 5 p.m. to get boxes.  That was a long day and night.

Ron and I have moved a few times in our lifetime together.  A few of those moves held a frightening resemblance to my move from my college apartment - only double the stuff!!  When we moved from Ronnie's home town to my home town we worked our poor relatives to the point of exhaustion, dehydration and dis-owning!  My cousin's husband was the youngest of the bunch, so he suffered the most, although the others were not far behind.  But, I am happy to report that with age comes knowledge.  Our last move was "as smooth as Tennessee Whiskey" (oh Lord, did I really use that???)- and I expect the same for this move.

We have the first step complete...gather your supplies - packing tape and dispenser, wide Sharpie marker, zip lock bags for screws and parts and pieces that must be kept with parent pieces, packing paper, cardboard and plastic boxes from our last move, labels (to differentiate from the last moves labeling and this move) and last but not least, what I call my Moving Journal.

My Moving Journal is really just a flip top spiral to keep track of things moving related.  It holds information like:

Quotes on Pods (last time it had moving company quotes), new home insurance quotes, etc.

Lists and numbers for connects/disconnects - there have been times I have had to reschedule disconnect/connect day or have had to call and check to see why it is five o'clock and we haven't seen hide nor hair of the DirecTV guy that was supposed to be there at one o'clock.  This eliminates saving it in my phone and deleting later because my journal is always with me.  Seriously,  I sleep with it by my bed in case I wake up remembering something I need to do, hence...

Moving to do lists, and...

Box inventory - basically just a list of numbered/labeled boxes and a list of contents in those boxes.  This saved a lot of search time.  If we needed something that had not been unpacked we just turned to our trusty list.  Not only that, but boxes with lower numbers correspond to less used items and those with higher numbers correspond to the things we use more and packed last.

I am sure I have forgotten a few things, but will post as I remember.  If anyone is out there visiting our blog and you have some packing tips we would love you to share.  I can say we have learned a lot about moving, but we are definitely don't know everything...yet.

820 8th Street, Part II

Oh man, I have been looking at a few of the after pics (I found some, Yea!!) of our little renovation and it reminds me of how much I loved that cozy little home.  Our current house is 700 sq ft larger and has a lot more windows.  I love all the light and it is cozy in a different way, but I can still appreciate the 820 type of coziness.

First, I found a few more pictures of the bathroom, mid renovation, so you get an idea of where it ended up.  But first a reminder of where it started.

Ok, now to the hallway to the master area.  It was all dark wood just like the wood in the master bedroom.  I so loved it when were lookey-loos, but it lost its charm once we moved in - for me anyway.  We did this part of the update when we put the house on the market on a suggestion from our very incredible real estate agent, Karen.  So, we primed and painted.  We did not change the blinds because we were selling so those still added a bit of dingy, but it was something the new owners could do easily.  The previous owner had central air and heat installed, so the little built-in gas heaters were not functional (I say they weren't, we never tried them, though) but I loved their character.   I can't actually say we updated the vinyl faux wood flooring, because we just replaced it with a more neutral peel and stick vinyl, but it looked really good.  Ronnie was already working his new job out of town, so it was up to me and Leo to scrape up the old vinyl.  When doing this you must, absolutely must scrape it to a smooth surface if you are going to use vinyl again.  It can be a lot of work, but can make for a really inexpensive update.

Remember where we started with the kitchen?

Well, after much work by my brother, Leo, and my nephew, Michael...

we ended up with this...

The professional kitchen designer we used suggested we put a corner walk in pantry in the right corner, but we opted to make an entry to what was the den area.  It was the natural place for the dining room.

We put a pocket door going along the back wall going into the hallway to the master bedroom.  I really wanted granite counter tops, but as the old saying goes, I have champagne taste on a beer pocket-book.  So we went with a new type of textured countertop that looked like granite.  I was actually very happy with it.  Especially, since we decided to do a little lip on the wall instead of going all the way up to the cabinets with it like our installer suggested.

The only thing we really did in the living room was pull up the carpet and paint.  Pulling up carpet is tough work for a couple of "fluffy" folks like me and Ron.  My best advice is have a really sharp utility knife with extra blades handy.  Also, cutting it in strips makes it sooooo much easier to dispose of.  So, just cut a strip, roll it up and dispose.  Simple, right.

Of course, it couldn't be as easy as just pulling up the carpet and padding.  Nope, then you have to get the glue up.  I honestly don't remember the name of the stuff we used, but I know I got it at Wal-Mart.

I can not tell you how much I loved starting a fire, cozying up on the sofa to write, or visit with Mom, Pam and Leo or just look out the window with a hot cup of coffee.

I forgot, we also did an easy, inexpensive update of the ceiling fan.  It is really surprising how a change that small and simple can make such a change in the feel of the room.

And, I have to admit, sometimes I would just sit on the sofa in the late evening and just enjoy our new kitchen!

And just a last few words on the last few rooms.  We went with a color called Artichoke for the den and dining room.  For our purposes we used the part of the den right off the kitchen as the dining room.  but for selling purposes, we switched it to the other side.  A new coat of paint and some fluffy, warm carpet really changed the master bedroom.

We learned so much from that redo and we hope the new home owners are loving it as much as we did.
